SAN JOSE, Calif. – May 9, 2023 – NetApp® (NASDAQ: NTAP), a global, cloud-based, data-centric software company, today announced that Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP has been awarded the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program ( FedRAMP ) Moderate entitlement in the US East (N. Virginia and Ohio) and US West (N. California and Oregon) AWS Regions, and High FedRAMP entitlement in the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. With this announcement, agencies at all levels of government can confidently move data workloads to Amazon Web Services (AWS) with Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, which meets stringent FedRAMP standards for security and risk assessments .
In addition, Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is now cleared for impact levels two, four, and five of the United States Department of Defense (DoD) Cloud Computing (CC) Security Requirements Guide (DoD SRG IL2, IL4, and IL5) in the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions and DoD SRG IL2 in the US AWS Regions.
“Government and defense organizations are increasingly turning to the cloud to help meet the compliance and security needs needed to support their sensitive and regulated workloads,” said Liz Martin, Director of the Department of Defense at AWS. “The Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP FedRAMP and DoD security validations offer public sector organizations a secure way to migrate their data to AWS, opening opportunities to use other AWS services and applications to drive efficiency at scale.”
FedRAMP is a US government-wide program that provides a standard approach to security assessment, authorization, and ongoing monitoring for cloud products and services. This government program promotes the adoption of secure cloud services among federal, state and local governments by providing a standardized approach to security and risk assessment for cloud technologies.
The new FedRAMP authorization for Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP covers both moderate and high impact levels, which means it can be used for the most critical data security and privacy needs, including the DoD and healthcare verticals. Other related compliances, such as NIST SP 800-53, are also approved with this announcement.
This FedRAMP and DoD CC SRG authorization builds on other recent security validations for NetApp ONTAP in the public sector, after ONTAP was named the first enterprise data management and storage platform to achieve Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) validation for a data-at-rest capability package (DAR).
“The new Amazon FSx permissions for NetApp ONTAP provide new opportunities to leverage existing efficiencies,” said Michelle Rudnicki, vice president, US Public Sector at NetApp. “Because NetApp solutions run on AWS, government agencies can migrate workloads using the same NetApp tools and processes they are already using in on-premises environments. Right away, they can begin moving core workloads seamlessly , such as disaster recovery and file services. to the cloud with minimal effort, increased security and cost savings.”
“From a similar on-premises deployment with NetApp, we saved approximately $800,000 in storage costs alone [using FSx for ONTAP]that’s without even the fancy tiering… not to mention the application fine-tuning [EHR or medical imaging repository] to actually perform better, faster and cheaper,” said Farhoud Salimi, Executive Director, Service Deliver, eHealth New South Wales.
